About Makhana

What are the health benefits of makhana?+
Makhana (fox nuts) is naturally low in fat, cholesterol-free, and a good source of plant protein and magnesium — which is why it's often used as a lighter snack alternative. See our nutrition facts guide for the full calorie, protein and carb breakdown per 100g.
Is makhana gluten-free?+
Yes — makhana is a lotus seed, not a grain, so it's naturally gluten-free. None of our flavours use gluten-containing ingredients, but if you have coeliac disease or a severe allergy, message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm the exact ingredient list before you order.
How is makhana actually made — is it fried?+
No oil, no frying — raw lotus seeds are dried, then roasted with heat alone until they pop into the light white puffs you eat. Our roasting process guide walks through the whole seed-to-puff process.
Why is makhana more expensive than other snacks?+
Makhana can't be harvested or popped by machine — pods are pulled from ponds by hand, and every seed is roasted and popped individually. That labour, not markup, is most of the cost. Our full cost breakdown and price guide cover it grade by grade.
Is makhana better than popcorn or chips?+
It depends what you're comparing it to — plain air-popped popcorn holds up reasonably well, but makhana pulls ahead once butter, oil or fried chips enter the picture. See our even-handed makhana vs popcorn and makhana vs chips comparisons.
How do I choose a good makhana brand?+
Check the ingredient list (short — seeds, oil, spices, nothing you can't pronounce), the size grade if it's raw makhana, how recently it was roasted, and whether the seller holds an FSSAI licence. Our buyer's guide covers all five in detail.
What does makhana taste like?+
Mild and faintly nutty on its own, with a light, airy crunch — closer to a blank canvas than a bold flavour, which is exactly why it takes seasoning so well. Our full taste description goes into more detail if you're deciding whether to try it.
